How to use the SWP calculator
Each month the withdrawal is taken first, then the rest earns the yearly return ÷ 12. If you raise withdrawals each year, for example to keep up with prices, the new amount applies from the start of each year.
- Enter the amount you’ll invest.
- Enter how much you want each month.
- Enter an expected return, and any yearly raise in withdrawals.
- Drag the withdrawal slider to find an amount the money can sustain.
Questions
What withdrawal is sustainable?
If the monthly withdrawal is less than what the money earns in a month, the balance never runs out. Raising withdrawals each year eats into this, which the chart shows.
Are SWP withdrawals taxed?
Usually only the gain part of each withdrawal is taxed, under the rules for that kind of fund. Check your local tax rules.
Why are there sliders under every box?
So you can see cause and effect. Drag the rate, time or amount and the result, chart and comparison update as you move. Type in the box when you need an exact figure.
Is this calculation exact?
It uses the standard formula. Banks and fund houses may round differently, charge fees or deduct tax, so treat the result as a close estimate and confirm with them.
