How to use the SIP calculator

The calculator assumes you invest at the start of every month and returns compound monthly at the yearly rate ÷ 12.

  1. Enter how much you will invest each month.
  2. Enter an expected yearly return. Long-run equity fund returns are often illustrated at 10 to 12 percent.
  3. Enter how many years you will invest.
  4. Optionally add a step-up: the percentage you will raise your SIP by each year.

Understanding your result

The estimated value assumes the same return every year. Real fund returns rise and fall, and past returns don’t guarantee future ones, so treat the result as one possible outcome. “Estimated gains” is the value minus what you put in, before tax and fund charges. Try a lower return to see a more cautious picture.

Questions

What is a step-up SIP?
You increase your monthly amount by a fixed percentage every year, usually in line with salary hikes. Even a 10 percent step-up makes a large difference over 15 to 20 years.
Are SIP returns taxed?
Yes. Gains on equity funds and debt funds are taxed differently depending on how long you hold them. Check the current rules or ask a tax adviser.
Is this calculation exact?
It uses the standard formula banks and fund houses publish. Your lender or bank may round differently or add fees, so treat the result as a close estimate and confirm with them before you commit.
