Base64 encode and decode
Encode or decode Base64 text, or turn a small file into a data URL.
Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
How to use the base64 encode and decode
Base64 turns any data into plain letters and digits so it can travel in text, such as email or a data URL. It is an encoding, not encryption: anyone can decode it.
- Paste text into Input.
- Tap Encode to get Base64, or Decode to turn Base64 back into text.
- To encode a file such as an icon, tap Encode a file. You get a data URL you can paste into HTML or CSS.
Questions
Is Base64 encryption?
No. It is a way to represent data as plain text characters. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords.
What does URL-safe mean?
It replaces + and / with - and _ and drops the = padding, so the result can sit in a web address without breaking it.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type or paste leaves your device.
