How to resize an image online
Checked on 27 October 2026. A guide from Gauritanaya.
This guide explains how resizing works on Gauritanaya. Always confirm any official form’s size rules (pixels and file size in KB) in that form’s notice. They change by exam and year.
The short answer
Resizing changes an image’s width and height in pixels. It is not the same as compressing (which aims at a file size in KB) or cropping (which cuts the frame). If a website asks for “200 × 230 px” or “1200 × 800”, you need a resize. If it asks for “20–50 KB”, you need a KB compressor, often after the resize.
Pixels vs centimetres vs file size
| What people say | What it usually means | Tool to use |
|---|---|---|
| “Make it 800 × 600” | Exact pixel width × height | Resize image |
| “Passport size 3.5 × 4.5 cm” | Print size; pixels depend on DPI | Passport photo sheet, or resize with cm and DPI |
| “Under 50 KB” | File size on disk, not pixels | Compress image to KB or Exam photo resizer |
| “Square for a profile” | Crop to 1:1, then optionally resize | Crop image, then resize |
DPI (dots per inch) only matters when you convert centimetres or inches to pixels for print, or for a form that quotes both. Formula: pixels ≈ cm ÷ 2.54 × DPI. At 300 DPI, 3.5 cm is about 413 px. Online forms that list only pixels ignore DPI. Follow the pixel numbers.
Keep the aspect ratio (or don’t)
- Lock aspect ratio when you want the photo to look normal after scaling (most product shots, headers, ID photos that are not being cropped).
- Unlock only when a portal demands an exact box (for example 200 × 230) that does not match your original ratio. Then you usually crop first, then resize, so faces are not stretched.
Stretched faces look wrong and often fail human checks on exam or KYC forms. Prefer crop, then resize, over stretch.
Steps: resize a photo on Gauritanaya
- Open Resize image.
- Choose your image from the phone or laptop. Processing stays on your device.
- Set width and/or height in pixels (or use a preset if the page offers one). Keep aspect ratio locked unless you intentionally need a different box after cropping.
- Preview the result. Check that text or faces are still readable.
- Download the resized file. If a form also has a KB limit, send the download through Compress image to KB or the Exam photo resizer.
Worked example (made-up numbers)
You have a phone photo about 4032 × 3024 px. A job portal wants a profile photo 600 × 600 px and under 100 KB.
- Crop to a square face area with Crop image.
- Resize to 600 × 600 with Resize image.
- Compress to 100 KB or under with Compress image to KB.
Skipping the crop and forcing 600 × 600 on a 4:3 photo would squash the face.
Common mistakes
- Renaming the file or converting JPG to PNG and expecting the pixel size to change. It won’t.
- Meeting the pixel size but missing the KB band. Many exam and university portals list both.
- Using a filter that blows the file size up again after a resize that already fitted.
- Uploading a screenshot of a photo instead of the photo file (extra borders, wrong ratio).
Limits
This article cannot guarantee a portal will accept a file. Portals reject for background colour, face percentage, ears visible, mask rules, file type, and live-photo capture, not only size. Confirm the official bulletin.
