Exam photo and signature size (KB and pixels)

Checked on 28 October 2026. A guide from Gauritanaya.

Confirm every pixel and KB limit in the official Information Bulletin for your exam. Boards change requirements by cycle. This guide is a reading aid, not a substitute for an NTA, IBPS, SSC or university notice. No tool can promise acceptance.

The short answer

Most Indian online forms ask for both:

  1. Pixel size (for example 200 × 230 for a photo), and
  2. File size in KB (for example 20–50 KB).

The exam photo and signature resizer is built to hit both in one pass when you enter the bulletin’s numbers.

Why portals reject uploads

Message (paraphrased, not a quote)Likely causeWhat to try
File size too large or too smallOutside the KB bandExport again inside the allowed range, a little under the max
Invalid dimensionsWrong width × height, or swappedMatch the bulletin’s order (width × height). Crop before resize if needed
Invalid formatNot JPG when JPG is requiredConvert, then resize
Photo not clear, or face rulesMask, dark background, cropped ears, low lightRetake. Follow the face and background rules in the bulletin
Signature too thin or blankOver-compressed, or the wrong cropStay above the KB floor. Scan a thicker pen stroke

Some systems treat “KB” loosely. If you are 1–2 KB over the limit, compress a little more rather than arguing about units.

Pages for one exam

Each page names the notice it used and the date that notice was checked, and a button that opens the exam photo resizer with that preset. A later notice wins. Where a pixel size was not in the notice, the page says the crop is only a starting shape.

  • SSC CGL 2026. The photograph is captured live. The signature is 10–20 KB.
  • IBPS CRP. Photo preferably 200 × 230 px, 20–50 KB. That is not the same as 3.5 × 4.5 cm.
  • UPSC. Photograph 20–200 KB. Signature 20–100 KB, signed three times.
  • NEET UG 2026. Photograph 10–200 KB. Signature 10–100 KB. No pixels stated.
  • JEE Main 2027 Session 1. Photograph 10–200 KB. Signature 10–100 KB. Class 10 PDF 50–300 KB. No pixels stated. Checked 28 October 2026 against the 2027 bulletin.
  • CSIR-UGC NET December 2026. Colour photograph 10–200 KB. Signature 10–50 KB. No pixels stated. Apply until 5 November 2026; late fee until 9 November 2026.
  • Railway RRB NTPC. Live photograph. Signature 30–49 KB. Not IBPS RRB.
  • KPSC. No preset. The Commission PDF could not be confirmed.
  • State TET and CTET. No shared state size. The preset is CTET February 2026.

At 300 DPI, 3.5 × 4.5 cm is about 413 × 531 pixels. 200 × 230 px is a different, smaller file. CTET states the centimetre size. IBPS prefers the pixel size for the upload, and also describes the photograph as 4.5 cm × 3.5 cm. Use the unit in your notice.

Some portals re-check the width and height, or they strip extra data from the JPEG. If the resizer adds blank comment data only to reach a minimum KB, that extra data may not count after the portal saves the file. Move Aim for to the right and re-save at a higher quality first.

Open the PDF bulletin for the session you are applying to. The UGC NET December 2026 checklist and the CSIR-UGC NET December 2026 checklist quote those exams’ bulletins, including the application windows.

Steps with the exam photo resizer

  1. Open the Exam photo resizer.
  2. Pick a preset that matches your exam if one is listed, or enter custom width, height, and minimum and maximum KB.
  3. Choose a clear, front-facing photo (good light, plain background if the bulletin asks for it). The work stays in the browser.
  4. Adjust until the preview meets the pixels and the file size sits inside the allowed band. Slightly under the maximum is safer.
  5. Download JPG if that is what the form requires. Repeat for the signature on a white background with a dark pen.
  6. If the portal wants the photo and the signature in one image, use Join photo and signature after both files are sized.

Worked example (made-up candidate)

A bulletin says: photo 200 × 230 px, 20–50 KB, JPG; signature 140 × 60 px, 10–20 KB. These numbers are for the workflow. Your board’s PDF wins.

  1. Photo: choose a matching preset, or type 200 × 230 and 20–50 KB, then download.
  2. Signature: custom 140 × 60 and 10–20 KB, then download.
  3. Upload each field separately. Do not rename the file to .png if the form insists on JPG.

Live photo and webcam failures

Size tools do not replace live capture. If a live photo fails, the usual practical steps are a plain background, better light, one face in frame, and another browser. Confirm the steps in your own bulletin.

Limits

No tool can promise that NTA, IBPS, SSC or a university will accept a file. Do not treat the illustrative pixel and KB numbers above as your exam’s rule unless they appear in that session’s bulletin. Filters and “guaranteed selection” claims have no place here.

FAQ

Can I just compress without resizing?
Sometimes a huge phone photo compressed to 40 KB becomes an unusable blur. Prefer the correct pixels first, then the KB band.
Why is my signature under 10 KB and rejected?
Some portals set a minimum KB. A very thin black line on white compresses too far. Redraw it thicker, or compress less aggressively.
Will the exam body accept the file?
The tool only changes dimensions and compression. Acceptance depends on that body’s rules and its checks. No tool can promise acceptance.
