Getting paid by UPI QR
Checked on 27 October 2026. A guide from Gauritanaya.
Not financial advice. A QR code only encodes the details you type. Test with a small payment to yourself before you print a counter sticker or share a code with customers. Gauritanaya does not process payments. UPI apps and your bank do.
The short answer
A QR code stores text (a link, Wi-Fi details, a UPI payment string, a phone number or an email) so a camera can read it. On Gauritanaya you can build codes for links, UPI, Wi-Fi, phone and email, then download PNG (for screens) or SVG (for sharp print). Generation runs in the browser.
UPI is a mode inside the QR code generator. There is not a separate UPI address on this site.
Where a QR shows up for a small seller
- A counter or standee UPI QR for walk-in payments
- A catalogue or bio link
- A Wi-Fi card for guests
- An event check-in link, or a support email or phone
What a UPI QR holds
When you choose UPI payment on the tool, you typically enter:
| Field | Role |
|---|---|
| UPI ID (VPA) | Where money should go. Use your own ID. A placeholder such as yourname@bank is only an example shape, never a code to print. |
| Amount in rupees (optional) | A fixed amount if you fill it. Leave it blank so the payer types the amount. |
| Note (optional) | A short remark some apps show |
The code encodes a UPI payment link that compatible apps can open. Scan-test with your own phone and send a tiny amount to yourself before customers rely on it.
Amount open, or amount filled in
- UPI ID only, no amount: the payer opens their app and types how much to send. Useful at a shop counter.
- UPI ID plus an amount: many apps pre-fill that amount. Useful for a fixed fee.
A dynamic merchant QR from a bank or payment-provider dashboard, which changes per bill, is a different product. This browser tool builds a static code from the fields you enter. It does not connect to your bank, and it does not produce a settlement report.
Steps on Gauritanaya
- Open the QR code generator.
- Choose the type: link, UPI payment, Wi-Fi, phone or email.
- Fill in the details. The preview updates as you type.
- Pick a size and colours. Keep a dark code on a light background so phones can scan it.
- Download PNG for a phone or a social post, or SVG for print.
- Test-scan. For UPI, complete a small payment to yourself.
- If you need a paper record, the Payment receipt generator or the GST invoice generator can make those documents when they apply. They are not a substitute for your bank’s record.
Safety
- Check the UPI ID character by character before you print. One wrong character can send money somewhere else.
- Prefer a code you generated over a sticker someone else pasted on a public machine or a doorway.
- If someone claiming to be support asks you to scan a QR in order to receive money, treat that as suspicious. A UPI QR you publish is for people paying you.
- On a poster, leave a quiet margin around the code. Do not stretch it out of a square.
- Higher damage resistance (error correction) can still scan if a logo or wear covers part of the code, but the pattern gets denser. Test again after you add a logo.
Do these QR codes expire?
No. The information sits inside the code. It keeps working as long as the link, UPI ID or Wi-Fi password remains valid. If you change your UPI ID or Wi-Fi password, print a new code.
Worked example (made-up shop)
You want a counter QR so customers pay your UPI ID, with the amount left open.
- Choose UPI payment.
- Enter your own UPI ID. Leave the amount blank. Do not copy a sample ID from an article.
- Download SVG, print it square, and put it at the counter.
- Scan with a second phone. Send a very small amount to yourself. Confirm it arrived.
- Only then use it for customers.
Links and Wi-Fi
- Link: paste the full URL. For a tracked campaign link, build it with the UTM link builder first, then make a QR of that URL.
- Wi-Fi: network name, password and security type, so guests can join without typing. Change the password if a public poster should stop working for old guests.
Limits
Not a payment gateway. The tool does not verify that a UPI ID belongs to you. It does not replace bank checks, GST invoice rules or a dispute process. Apps may show optional fields differently. Test on the apps your customers use. Not financial advice.
