How to use the RD calculator

Each monthly instalment earns interest, compounded every quarter, for as long as it stays deposited. That’s the method banks and India Post use.

  1. Enter your monthly deposit.
  2. Enter your bank’s RD rate.
  3. Enter the tenure in months.
  4. Read the maturity amount and interest.

Understanding your result

The maturity amount is all your monthly deposits plus interest, compounded quarterly. Banks may round each quarter’s interest differently, so expect small differences from your passbook. Tax on interest isn’t included.

Questions

Is RD interest taxable?
Yes. It’s added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, and banks deduct TDS above the yearly limit.
What happens if I miss an instalment?
Banks usually charge a small penalty, and several missed instalments can lead to the account being closed. Rules vary by bank.
RD or SIP?
An RD gives a fixed, guaranteed return. A SIP in mutual funds can earn more over long periods but the returns aren’t guaranteed. Compare with the SIP calculator.
