How to use the PPF calculator

The government kept the PPF rate at 7.1% a year for October to December 2026. The rate is reviewed every quarter, so the calculation assumes it stays the same.

  1. Enter how much you’ll deposit each year (₹500 to ₹1.5 lakh).
  2. Keep the current 7.1% rate or try another.
  3. Choose 15 years, or longer if you’ll extend in 5-year blocks.
  4. Read the maturity value and open the yearly table.

Understanding your result

Maturity value assumes the current rate stays the same for the whole period. The government reviews the PPF rate every quarter, so the real result will differ if the rate changes.

Questions

When should I deposit to earn the most?
Before the 5th of the month. Interest is worked out on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month, so a lump sum before 5 April earns interest for the whole year. The calculator assumes this.
Is PPF tax-free?
Yes, in the old regime deposits qualify for the 80C deduction, and the interest and maturity amount are tax-free in both regimes.
Can I withdraw early?
Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th year, and loans against the balance from the 3rd to 6th year.
