How to use the gratuity calculator

Gratuity is 15 days’ wages for each year of service. For covered employers, a month is taken as 26 working days, so the formula is last basic + DA × 15 × years ÷ 26, and a final part-year of more than six months counts as a full year.

  1. Enter your last monthly basic salary plus dearness allowance.
  2. Enter your years and months of service.
  3. Choose whether your employer is covered and your employment type.
  4. Read the gratuity amount and how much of it is tax-free.

Understanding your result

The result is the gratuity your employer pays under the Payment of Gratuity formula. Private-sector employees can receive up to ₹20 lakh tax-free over their career. Your employer’s policy may pay more than the legal minimum.

Questions

How many years do I need to get gratuity?
Five years of continuous service for permanent employees. Under the labour codes in force since November 2025, fixed-term employees qualify after one year. On death or disability, it’s paid regardless of service.
How much gratuity is tax-free?
For private-sector employees, up to ₹20 lakh over your whole career. Government employees’ gratuity is fully tax-free.
What counts as wages?
Basic salary plus dearness allowance. Under the new labour codes, if allowances make up more than half your pay, the excess is added back to wages, which can raise your gratuity.
