How to use the calorie calculator

Mifflin-St Jeor: 10 × kg + 6.25 × cm − 5 × age + 5 for men, or − 161 for women. Revised Harris-Benedict (Roza and Shizgal): men 88.362 + 13.397 × kg + 4.799 × cm − 5.677 × age; women 447.593 + 9.247 × kg + 3.098 × cm − 4.330 × age. Katch-McArdle: 370 + 21.6 × lean mass in kg. The result is multiplied by the FAO/WHO/UNU physical activity level for your band. A gradual weight-loss intake is shown as 500 kcal below your estimate, which sits at the lower end of the 500–1,000 kcal daily deficit in the NHLBI guide, and never below 1,200 kcal for women or 1,500 kcal for men without medical supervision (Harvard Health).

  1. Choose units, then enter your sex, age, height and weight.
  2. Pick the activity band that matches a normal week.
  3. Optionally change the equation; Katch-McArdle needs your body fat percentage.
  4. Read your estimated daily needs in kcal and kJ.

Understanding your result

BMR is the energy your body uses at complete rest. Daily needs multiply it by your activity level, shown as a range because each activity band is a range. If your weight stays steady over a few weeks, you are eating about your daily needs.

Questions

How accurate is this?
Equations give an estimate for a typical person. Your real needs can differ, so watch how your weight changes over a few weeks and adjust.
Why is there a range?
Each FAO/WHO activity band covers a range of activity levels. The middle value is shown in large type, with the full range below it.
Why doesn’t it show a weight-loss number for me?
It isn’t shown for under-18s, during pregnancy, or when your BMI is below 18.5. In those cases, please talk to a doctor or registered dietitian.
Worried about eating or weight?
If food, weight or exercise is causing you distress, you’re not alone. Find A Helpline lists free, confidential support in many countries.
Is this a diagnosis?
No. It compares your numbers with published ranges for general wellness. Only a qualified health professional can assess your health, taking your history and other tests into account.
