How to use the CAGR calculator

CAGR is (End ÷ Start)1/years − 1: the steady yearly rate that would take the start value to the end value. Real growth is rarely steady; CAGR smooths it out so different investments can be compared.

  1. Enter the start and end values.
  2. Enter the time between them in years (decimals are fine).
  3. Read the CAGR.
  4. Drag the end value or years to see how the rate changes.

Questions

Is CAGR the same as average return?
No. A fall of 50% then a rise of 50% averages 0% but leaves you 25% down. CAGR reflects what actually happened to the money.
Does CAGR include money added along the way?
No. For investments with regular additions, such as SIPs, the right measure is XIRR.
Why are there sliders under every box?
So you can see cause and effect. Drag the rate, time or amount and the result, chart and comparison update as you move. Type in the box when you need an exact figure.
