How to use the compound interest calculator

Without additions the result is P × (1 + r/n)n×t, where n is how many times a year interest is added (for continuous compounding, P × er×t). Monthly additions are made at the end of each month and earn the same effective rate from then on. Simple interest pays P × r × t on the starting amount only.

  1. Enter the starting amount and the yearly rate.
  2. Choose how long, and how often interest is added.
  3. Optionally add a monthly amount.
  4. Drag any slider and compare the solid line (compound) with the dashed line (simple).

Questions

How much difference does compounding frequency make?
Less than most people expect. At 8% for 10 years, yearly compounding turns 1,00,000 into about 2,15,892 and daily compounding into about 2,22,535. The rate and the time matter far more, which the sliders show.
What is the effective yearly rate?
The single yearly rate that would give the same result with yearly compounding: (1 + r/n)n − 1. Use it to compare offers that compound differently.
What is the rule of 72?
Divide 72 by the yearly rate to estimate how many years money takes to double. At 8%, about 9 years. The calculator shows the exact figure.
Why are there sliders under every box?
So you can see cause and effect. Drag the rate, time or amount and the result, chart and comparison update as you move. Type in the box when you need an exact figure.
Is this calculation exact?
It uses the standard formula. Banks and fund houses may round differently, charge fees or deduct tax, so treat the result as a close estimate and confirm with them.
