How to use the retirement calculator

Expenses are grown by inflation until retirement. The savings needed are the amount that, earning the after-retirement return, pays those expenses every month (still rising with inflation) until the age you plan for. The monthly investment is what, invested at the start of each month at the before-retirement return, fills the gap left after your current savings grow.

  1. Enter your age, retirement age and the age to plan until.
  2. Enter your monthly expenses today and an inflation rate.
  3. Enter expected returns before and after retirement, and what you have saved.
  4. Drag the sliders: retiring a few years later or starting with more changes the answer a lot.

Questions

What age should I plan until?
Plan longer than you expect to need. Running out of money late in life is the bigger risk, so many planners use 85 to 95.
Why does inflation matter so much?
At 5% a year, expenses double in about 14 years. Thirty years from now, today’s budget costs over four times as much.
Does this include pensions or rent income?
No. Subtract any regular income you expect in retirement from your monthly expenses before entering them.
Why are there sliders under every box?
So you can see cause and effect. Drag the rate, time or amount and the result, chart and comparison update as you move. Type in the box when you need an exact figure.
Is this calculation exact?
It uses the standard formula. Banks and fund houses may round differently, charge fees or deduct tax, so treat the result as a close estimate and confirm with them.
