Redact and blur

Hide what isn’t needed before you share a document: an Aadhaar number, a bank account, a signature, a face. What you hide is removed from the saved file, not just covered.

How to use the redact and blur

Sharing a whole document often shares more than the other side needs. Official practice is to hide what isn’t required: UIDAI’s masked Aadhaar shows only the last 4 digits of the number, banks ask for statements with other accounts hidden, and court and government redaction uses solid black boxes. A black box is the safest way to hide text and numbers. Blur and pixelate suit faces and photos, but small text can sometimes still be guessed from a light blur, so this tool blurs very heavily. The “for this purpose only” line is a common way to stop a copy of an ID being reused for something else.

  1. Drop photos or a PDF on the box.
  2. If it’s an Aadhaar card or letter, tick the Aadhaar box: the number is found and the first 8 digits are masked. Check the result.
  3. Choose black box, white-out, blur or pixelate, and drag over anything else to hide. Tap a box to select it and remove it.
  4. Optionally add a “for this purpose only” line, then save as PDF or JPG.

Questions

Is a masked Aadhaar accepted?
UIDAI itself offers a masked Aadhaar, which shows only the last 4 digits, for sharing where the full number isn’t needed. Some uses, such as certain KYC checks, ask for the full number or a VID, so check what the organisation requires.
Does it find the Aadhaar number automatically?
It looks for 12 digits printed as three groups of four. If your card is worn, at a steep angle or the photo is blurry, it may miss it; then choose “Aadhaar mask” and drag a box around the number. Always check that only the last 4 digits show before you share.
What about the QR code on the back of an Aadhaar card?
The QR code holds your details in digital form. If the other side doesn’t need to scan it, cover it with a black box or pixelate it.
Can someone remove the black box from the PDF?
No. Each page is saved as a new picture with the box drawn into it. The original text underneath is not in the file.
Is my document uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser, and the file never leaves your device.
